Description

Introduced at the time when the jet planes arrived massively in the air forces, the B-36, with its six piston engines and its right wing, is technologically exceeded even before its entry into service. The first aircraft, B-36A and B, had a cruising speed of around 350 km/h, while the jet-powered B-47 Stratojet, which flew in December 1947, reached over 900 km/h. However, its operational ceiling of more than 12,000 m must allow it to remain out of range of enemy fighter planes. From the B-36D, in order to reduce the take-off run and increase the maximum speed, the B-36 are equipped with four additional turbojets placed in nacelles under the wings. However, from 1955, they began to be replaced by the Boeing B-52, jet and swept-wing, and the last were withdrawn in 1959.
