DH.98 Mosquito NF Mk.XV ‘High-Altitude Night Fighter
Description
During the Second World War, the Junkers Ju
86P and Ju 86R high-altitude reconnaissance and bomber aircraft
operated over Great Britain at heights beyond the reach of most RAF fighters.
This situation changed with the introduction of the high-altitude Spitfire
Mk.VII and specially modified Spitfire Mk.IX variants.
Concerned that the Luftwaffe might deploy more
capable high-altitude bombers in the future, the Royal Air Force initiated the
development of a specialised high-altitude fighter version of the famous De
Havilland Mosquito.
The resulting Mosquito NF Mk.XV featured
a pressurised cockpit, airborne radar housed in the nose, an extended-span wing
measuring 19 metres, and high-altitude Rolls-Royce Merlin 76 engines
driving four-bladed propellers. Only a small production batch was completed,
and these aircraft were assigned to No. 85 Squadron RAF for flight
testing and operational evaluation.
This Special Hobby release represents one of
the rarest and most distinctive Mosquito variants. Its unique high-altitude
configuration and elegant colour schemes make it an especially attractive
subject for enthusiasts of advanced RAF aircraft development.
