Convair XC-99

Description

Giant prototype of post-war American strategic transport

The Roden 351 kit offers a faithful 1/144 scale reproduction of the Convair XC-99, one of the largest propeller aircraft ever built in the United States. This model is an exceptional choice for enthusiasts of experimental prototypes and heavy military aviation from the post-Second World War era.

The Convair XC-99 was a cargo version derived from the B-36 Peacemaker strategic bomber, with which it shared many structural elements, including the gigantic wing and tail. Designed as a long-range strategic transport, it was developed in the immediate post-war period to meet the growing logistical needs of the US Air Force.

Making its maiden flight in 1947, the XC-99 was an impressive sight: over 55 metres long, with a wingspan of nearly 70 metres and six pusher propeller engines. It could carry up to 50 tonnes of cargo or 300 soldiers on two decks. Despite its qualities, the project never progressed beyond the prototype stage, mainly due to the rapid transition to jet propulsion and very high logistical costs.

The XC-99 nevertheless served for a few years, notably for the transport of heavy parts and logistical support, before being withdrawn from service in 1957.
